Dewitt Hutchinson, 85, Dies After Three-Vehicle Crash at Route 29 and I-64 [Albemarle County, VA]

An 85-year-old Stuarts Draft man has died from injuries he suffered in a three-vehicle crash at the interchange of U.S. Route 29 and Interstate 64 in Albemarle County, according to the Albemarle County Police Department.

The crash occurred Wednesday afternoon, August 26, 2026. The cause remains under investigation.

What Happened

At approximately 4 p.m. on August 26, Albemarle County Police and Albemarle County Fire Rescue responded to a three-vehicle crash on U.S. Route 29 at the interchange with Interstate 64.

Dewitt Hutchinson, 85, of Stuarts Draft, was a passenger in one of the vehicles. He was transported to UVA with life-threatening injuries and later died from those injuries. Police said Hutchinson was wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash.

The drivers of two of the vehicles were also transported to UVA with minor injuries.

The Albemarle County Police Department’s Traffic Unit continues to investigate the collision. Police have not yet determined the cause but said they do not believe alcohol or speed were factors in the crash.
