Fredericksburg Man Charged With DUI With Child in Vehicle [Stafford County, VA]
A 54-year-old Fredericksburg man is facing DUI and child abuse and neglect charges after Stafford County deputies stopped him following reports of erratic driving with a child in the vehicle on the evening of Saturday, September 12, 2026.
What Happened
Shortly after 7:15 p.m. on September 12, a Stafford County Sheriff’s deputy spotted a vehicle being driven erratically near International Parkway and Warrenton Road and initiated a traffic stop. The driver, Javier Mejia, 54, of Fredericksburg, reportedly admitted to deputies that he had consumed alcohol before getting behind the wheel. Investigators reported that Mejia had glossy eyes, slurred speech, and an odor of alcohol during the stop.
After field sobriety tests were administered, Mejia refused to provide a breath sample and was taken into custody. A child was also in the vehicle at the time of the stop. After being transported to the Stafford County Sheriff’s Office, Mejia again declined to provide a breath or blood sample.
Mejia was charged with driving under the influence, abuse and neglect of children, a traffic lane violation, and refusal to submit to a breath or blood test. He was held at Rappahannock Regional Jail without bond.
DUI With a Child in the Vehicle
Driving under the influence with a child in the vehicle can result in additional criminal charges beyond DUI, depending on the circumstances. In this case, authorities reported that Mejia was charged with abuse and neglect of children in addition to driving under the influence.
